I would like to see the number of abortions reduced as much as possible. I believe that the most effective way to do this is through looking at policies that help to diminish the root causes of abortion – namely unwanted pregnancies, or other economic and social challenges that make it daunting for some expectant mothers to carry their pregnancies to term.
I believe that looking at clear evidence-based solutions, such as those regarding the availability of contraceptives, improving respectful but holistic sexual education, and social support structures to encourage adoption and other positive alternatives, will have the greatest immediate impact on reducing the number of abortions performed in the state.
I do not believe in pushing or supporting legislation on this issue for purely political purposes. Too many bills are proposed and passed that focus more on appeasing either a pro-life or pro-choice crowd rather than actually working toward results. There is only so much time in a legislative session that can be spent improving our state. We need to spend that precious time on bills that work, and we need to do so in a way that is honest, open, and respectful to all.
